What?
This is a home for sale in Sidney. It is amazing how much the taxes have been raised on this home as well. This may be an example of how our County Officials are making up for the huge expenditures and loss of income from other taxes. This home is for sale now so the complete tax history is hidden from most new buyers. But let’s take a look.
This is only a 1,400 sq ft home. Under the previous tax assessor, you can clearly see during the loss of Cabelas where the taxes were cut in half and the rate was lower. Since that time however through 2018 until today, the rates have increased and the total taxes have more than doubled.
So, during a time when we are recovering from COVID and fighting off a recession, our County Officials did this to a homeowner in Sidney. Unreal.
The County Commissioners set the tax rate you see on the right, and the Tax Assessor Set the value. At one time, our assessor and officials DID work with the community. You can clearly see that in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Now, it feels like they trying to just collect taxes and in the last 4 years, these poor homeowners’ taxes have more than doubled.
We have lots of people asking us now to take a look at their homes. We are doing that and will try to show some more examples in the near future.
Bottom Line….
We the people of Cheyenne County control all this. In 1965 Nebraska gave full control over property taxes to the local County Officials. If we don’t like what they are doing… replace them in an election. It is our choice Sidney, but I think we need to go back and show a little more kindness as we try to recover from these past few years.
PS This person is paying the same amount in Property Taxes as a person that owns a 1.6 million dollar home in Hawaii. Figure that one out!
