At the last Commissioners’ meeting, one county official said “Our checkbook is empty” when asked about why they needed new property taxes. I so enjoyed Lynette’s response. “Well stop spending then like all of us have had to do.”

This year, inflation hit all of us at about 8.5%. The cost of living however rose even more about 13%. Other things like natural gas used to heat our homes has risen an unbelievable 525% since June of 2020. Prepare for an expensive winter. It has been really tough on those residents on fixed incomes.

Is anyone thinking of the economic pressure on the citizens? People right now are enduring much higher costs and you want to raise their costs even more so you don’t have to make difficult decisions like they do every day. Makes no sense.

Did you know that almost 46% of Nebraska children are on assisted school lunches and it is increasing! It is tough for everyone. This is why we are pushing NOT to raise taxes and have our local officials tighten the belt just like every family in this county has had to do.

At the meeting, we were told, that gasoline prices have gone up. We need more money. Yes, they have. For us as well. Tighten the belt. The checkbook may be empty for the county and cities, but it is also empty for many of the citizens as well. Put off the increases and let the local economy recover. Tighten the belt.
