Our Complicated Taxes
One of our many goals with this group is to provide more information so everyone can make educated decisions when voting for candidates. Yesterday one of the commentators on this page stopped by and gave me more education on what is happening here. Thank you for that. I was really taken back. Seems like lots of people know little things but not everything about what happens here. Makes it easy to deceive the people. That will change!!!
Cheyenne County finally put this chart on the front page of the website. We thank them for that! It is helpful to know about your property taxes and how many bites this local government is taking out of your money. This is only your property tax! Of course, these levies vary where you live, so you don’t pay each one of these, but in total, this is a good look at our county.
At the last Commissioners’ meeting, one of the Commissioners gave the typical political argument. “we haven’t raised taxes for 3 years”. Nebraska legislature is calling out these types of comments by local officials because what commissioners and boards are doing is hiding behind each other, passing the buck.
So if you haven’t raised taxes why has my property tax bill gone up every year for the last 5 or 6 years? Because other boards are raising it OR most importantly they are raising your property values which give all tax districts a raise. They can legally say they are not raising your taxes when they only raise your property values. NOT HONEST. We need honesty and clarity from our officials. Not double-speak and subterfuge.
Why do they do this? Power, plain and simple. Officials love to spend and control money because it is power. What about the people? In the month of October, we will begin a series of investigative posts in an attempt to inform our fellow citizens, so voting decisions can be made. Close to 20 citizens have come forward to help with some of these posts. We will work together for the people of this county and local city governments. Sunshine is a great thing. People working together is a great thing.
