Did You Know?
In most of our conversations with residents of Cheyenne County, many didn’t know about the tax increase coming next month. Here are some other things most do not know. Time for more transparency… here we go…
1. Our Commissioners are also our Tax Equalization Board. So one moment they spend the money, and then in the next, they reconvene as the tax board and raise the money through taxes. A true example of tax and spend.
2. In the last few years, there have been 748 tax protests presented to the Cheyenne County Board. 748!!! That is a lot for a county our size. In our particular case, the County Assessor raised the valuation on our property by 282% and the County Board passed it without questioning the raise. This makes us wonder if this over-valuation and taxing is happening to others in the county as well.
Last week, in an attempt to look over these tax protests, we made records requests to County Attorney Paul Schaub for these records. We believe there needs to be transparency with these taxes in this county and see if other residents are having the same issues. Attorney Schaub quoted us law and said if we wanted to see the records it would be $374 for copies of them.
$374!!! Ok… we paid it and we will be getting the county records. There will be transparency here with the taxes in this county. We will be sharing the overall taxing here on this page in the next few weeks. Stay tuned. Everyone needs the truth.
September is Nebraska’s truth in taxation month. We have a huge tax increase coming in September for ALL residents in the county. We are already one of the highest taxed counties in Nebraska, and Nebraska is one of the highest taxed states in the heartland. This is enough. Lots more coming soon!!!
