Hello Cheyenne County Nebraska!,
First, we would like to thank the Platte Institute in Omaha for assisting us with the Cheyenne County Commissioners and Nebraska State Law.
From our previous post, many of you know a very important meeting is coming in September and every resident of Cheyenne County will be affected by it. Commissioners are looking for an 8% increase in our taxes for next year. This is a huge increase for most of Cheyenne County.
Under a new Nebraska law LB644, Truth in Taxation, Commissioners have to complete several steps in notifying the residents of Cheyenne County before they can vote on the tax increase. At this time, these steps have not been completed.
Cheyenne County officials have told the NACO (Nebraska Association of County Officials) that they now have a meeting scheduled for September 19th at 6pm. to vote on the 8% tax increase, but they haven’t properly informed the public yet of the meeting and taken the required input from the public, in order to vote on this increase as outlined in Nebraska law. We hope this will be corrected before they vote.
This is our time. This meeting is very important and allows the public to express exactly how we feel about the 8% tax increase. We feel that proper notice needs to be given and all who want to express their opinions should be allowed to at a properly scheduled and notified meeting. It is so important that this is done correctly because so many are going to be paying increased taxes.
So mark your calendars for sometime in mid to late September. Platte Institute is recommending moving the date later in the month to make sure proper notice is given. We are noticing the Commissioners of that. In any case, share posts and mark your calendars. We need to be at this meeting. More coming!
