Voters Have POWER!
Yesterday’s post created a lot of messages for us. Many messages were just “shocking” to us because we know our rights.
This is the way it has always been…. NO. Voters have the power. In 1978 as a first-time voter in California I worked to pass “Proposition 13”. This monumental law known as “People’s Initiative to Limit Property Taxation” was overwhelmingly passed by the voters. Tax relief came to people on limited incomes and excessive property taxes STOPPED. I will put a link to the law below. Please read it. This is YOUR power.
Voters have the power. We control what happens in your local community. With taxes, you are guilty first and have to prove that the assessor used the wrong numbers. So what do you do? Replace the assessor! Find one that works FOR THE PEOPLE. The Commissioners are supposed to protect the people. If they don’t do that… replace them! Recall works! I have been part of several campaigns. It works. Voters have the power.
You the voter control your county. Ultimate control over ANY official that threatens you can be achieved through your vote. Nebraska rightly gave this power to local voters.
This year the state of Nebraska did a poll. They found only 39% of voters knew their rights. Most don’t know. This is a quote from Diane Battiato, Douglas County Assessor, “While there are plenty of aggrieved taxpayers who don’t like the assessment process or feel they have been done wrong by it, local political subdivisions, (Cheyenne County for example) HAVE THE CHOICE to reduce tax rates as assessments rise.” It is YOUR CHOICE!
Our page will be devoted to informing everyone of your rights and what is happening in this county, so you can make decisions on the direction you want to see our local government take. We will also be sharing the good things along with people’s suggestions of areas that need to be fixed.
Take a moment and read these articles. This is your power. If we can get everyone to understand they have power, then there will be no more “This is how it has always been”.
